On my journey to living a more sustainable, healthy, and grain-free life I found that things were beginning to feel a little stale. The same lifting routine at the gym, the same go-to Paleo friendly drink at the bar every Friday night, the same 85% dark chocolate fair-trade organic chocolate for my mid-day treat. The Paleo and gluten-free lifestyle didn’t feel like an adventure anymore. Where was my vigor to scour the restaurant menu for Primal options? Where was my drive to search the local liquor store for Tequila made with 100% agave? Why does this extra dark raw organic chocolate bar taste like all the others?!
Two years ago I found out that I had Celiacs. No wheat?! No barley or rye?! I had been a vegetarian for four years up until that fateful doctor's visit, and that is what I had survived off of at every meal. Stomach pains, hives, lightheadedness, and agonizing digestive issues all made me throw in the towel and talk to a professional. Thus began my gluten-free journey. If I were to take pride in one thing on this insane food roller coaster I have been on it’s that I get all the facts. Like. Sexy-Medical-Journal-Study-IV-Published-Academic-Article vii-style. No shame. I am a nerd. In Biology I paid attention, and boy, am I glad I did. After pouring over Loren Cordain’s articles and Rob Wolf’s information online I decided to order The Paleo Solution and give it a read. All the while I bit my nails with mounting separation anxiety of the thought of starting my day without my sacred cup of oatmeal and banana. What about pancakes? What about coffee? What about hummus? What about soy milk? WHAT ABOUT PIZZA?!?! All of these comfort foods that I have come to love so much would I really have to give up?
Since going primal and gluten free two years ago my acne has cleared up, I've lost weight and gained muscle, no more blood sugar crashes, and my fertility has come back full force. I firmly believe that every primal diet is different depending on each caveman and cave girl's needs. Some may choose to be %100 Paleo, some may just be gluten free, and others may consider themselves Primal with a side of grass-fed dairy. Regardless of if you put butter in your coffee, indulge in fruit, or are on a strictly no nuts or eggs diet- this site has something for you. So much about the Paleo and gluten-free lifestyle is having to say “no”- no to the side of macaroni and cheese, no to the Happy Hour Menu’s wide selection of Bud Light and Miller High Life, no to the french vanilla cupcakes at the office birthday party. No longer do I want we gluten-free-for-lifers to have to say no.
This blog was born out of me living my gluten-free life on the snooze-fest safe side. I knew that the only way out of this primal vacuum was to create an option that gave me the ability to say yes. Finally one day after my 3rd fresh lime juice and club soda margarita I knew it was time to roll up my sleeves and get dirty, no, not dirty- naughty.
